All about WIGS

 All about WIGS…

  1. What is a lace wig and what are the different types of lace?

Lace wigs are similar to traditional wigs. The main difference is that the hair is sewn to a net strand by strand to create the illusion that hair is growing from the scalp. Lace wigs also allows for parting of the hair.

  1. How do you choose a lace wig that suits you?

Lace wigs should look as natural as possible. There are 3 areas to look into: the face shape, lace-wig colour must match the skin complexion and lastly the length of hair. Once your lace-wig is chosen get your stylist to cut or trim into a style that suits the face shape.

  1. Is it best to glue or sew on the wig or leave it loose?

To protect a hairline, wearing a lace-wig loose is the best option. If you require a more permanent fit, rather sew the lace-wig into the corn-rows.

  1. How do I know where to cut the lace after purchase?

When cutting the lace follow the hair-line of the lace wig. It is preferable to get a qualified weave stylist to cut the lace to ensure no damage is caused to the lace wig.

  1. Where do you apply the glue in order not to ruin your hairline?

The glue should be equally applied to the hairline of the lace-wig. Glue is not the preferable option due to the hair-loss caused by the glue. If glue is used try to follow these 3 rules: 1) Do not keep glued for longer than one week 2) Do not glue onto the baby hairs of the hair-line 2) Remove carefully with a glue remover spray and do not pull off.

  1. How do you maintain it when you are not wearing it?

Maintain the lace-wig like a second head of hair by following these 5 steps:

1) Ensure shampooed and do an intense treatment at least every 2 weeks 2) Brush the hair from bottom to top and do not pull hardly as this will damage the lace 3) Use a tangle-teezer or flexible bristle brush to prevent hair breakage 4) When drying the wig, lay the lace wig on a towel and allow to dry over night. 5) Keep lace wig in a silk scarf within a hair-bag. Do not place in a plastic bag as this will impact the longevity of the hair.

  1. The glue lifts, so how do you keep it on to last longer?

The glue is not meant to last long. If it is lifting it is time to remove, wash both the lace-wig plus the natural hair and rest the natural hair-line.

  1. How do you care for your hair under the wig?

If the lace wig is glued, taped or sewed in, it should be removed every 2 weeks. The natural hair should be washed, treated and dried. The lace wig can than be re-applied. It is very difficult to maintain the natural hair under a lace wig without removing as you do not have access to the scalp or hair.

  1. What is your lace wig’s best friend, go to product and why?
  • Tangle Teezer
  • Sulphate free Shampoo and Conditioner eg. Moroccan Oil, 3 Sisters, Pureology, Mizani
  • Styling Aid to moisturize the hair eg. Moroccan Oil, Ladine Brazilian Oil

  1. How do I sleep with a lace wig?
  • If glued, taped or sew-in, brush and plait the hair to prevent tangling
  • If not permanently applied, remove the lace-wig, brush and store in hair-bag
  1. Do you need to wear a wig cap under the wig?
  • A wig cap is not always needed and depends on what the natural hair condition or style is as well as preference
