Dirty truth: Everyone cares about their appearance. Everyone.
It has always been that way, from the first time a caveman dyed a pelt and wore it over his shoulder or to that time you splurged a bit on an outfit because you had a big date or interview the next day. This notion of ‘caring’ about what one looks like should not be labeled as vain or superficial, but rather seen as an act of self-care. In this sense grooming should be re-imagined not as just a daily regimen, but as an adaptive mode of personal expression and self-care.
Without sounding pontifical or self-indulgent, it is important to break down what self-care means. Self-care is care provided “for you, by you”. It’s about identifying your own needs and taking steps to meet them. It is taking the time to do some of the activities that nurture you. In short, self-care is about taking proper care of yourself and treating yourself as kindly as you treat others.
This, however is easier said than done. Taking care of oneself does not come easy – it really doesn’t. We are just not wired this way.
Think of it this way: On an airplane, an oxygen mask drops in front of you. What do you do? As we all know, the first rule is to put on your own oxygen mask before you assist anyone else. Only when we first help ourselves can we effectively help others. Caring for yourself is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. But you benefit greatly from self-care and so do others in your life.
Therefore, it is so important that everyone unabashedly embrace personal habits aimed at optimizing their mental wellbeing, health and appearance – despite busy schedules, or the personal and professional curveballs that life tend to throw our way.
As a TV and Radio personality, balancing a demanding and an ever-changing schedule, I must actively make time for self-care – which includes a weekly grooming session at Sorbet Man. Visiting a Sorbet Man outlet has become way more than just a quick haircut and beard trim – for me, it is a ‘fully immersive self-care experience’ that plays a crucial part, not just for my appearance but my self-confidence and general well-being.
If you have naturally curly hair, I recommend a Keratin Smoothing Treatment (KST), as this works wonderfully when you want to smooth out your hair – making it much more versatile for styling purposes, pair this with a Signature Haircut and you are sure to look and feel camera ready!
Do not forget about the brows and beard!
If you are anything like me, grooming your facial hair is just as important as taking care of your crown, that’s why Sorbet Man’s Proraso Authentic Italian Beard Treatment and their Brow Threading treatments are firm favourites. Of all areas of male grooming, brows tend to be the most overlooked – but if properly maintained it can make a huge difference – opening the face and highlighting one’s natural inner glow.
A mantra that changed my life immensely, was coined by life coach and best-selling author, Iyanla Vanzant; ‘You must fill your cup first before it can overflow to others’. So, whether big or small, proactively make the time to take care of yourself and your appearance. The difference will be felt and seen. Go for that manicure or that brow thread or even that haircut – fill your cup, let it overflow and be the best you can be!
